Former CSK captain and seasoned IPL player MS Dhoni could potentially play as an uncapped player in the upcoming season, with the BCCI reportedly considering bringing back an old rule. 

According to reports, the Indian Board is set to revive an old rule, stating that any international cricketer retired for more than five years will be placed in the uncapped player category.

Dhoni, who last represented India in the 2019 ODI World Cup and retired on August 15, 2020, has now completed five years, making him eligible to play as an uncapped player in the Indian Premier League.

Additionally, this move will allow CSK to retain other players at higher prices, as under the old rule, uncapped players can be retained for up to INR 4 crore. In the last mega auction in 2022, CSK retained Dhoni for INR 12 crore. 

‘We Have Not Requested for It’ – CSK CEO 

However, contrary to reports, the CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan stated that he was unaware of any plans to revive this rule, adding that they did not request the BCCI to bring back such a rule and that the decision is entirely the Board’s own. 

“I’ve no idea about it. We’ve not requested it. The BCCI have themselves told us that the ‘uncapped player rule’ may be kept, that’s all. They  haven’t announced anything yet. The rules and regulations will be announced by the BCCI,” Kasi said during a chat with Times of India (TOI).  

Whether MS Dhoni will play in IPL 2025 depends entirely on him, as he has already stated that his decision will be influenced by his fitness. If everything goes well, he may potentially return for the next season.
