Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is unhappy with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to rest Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and not include them in the Duleep Trophy 2024 squad.

Sunil Gavaskar believes that both players should have participated in the domestic tournament to get some match practice ahead of the much-anticipated Test series against Bangladesh.

He emphasized that players in their mid-30s need to maintain their standards to avoid weakening muscle memory. However, he backed the BCCI’s decision to rest the ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

In his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar wrote:

“The selectors have not picked skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the Duleep Trophy, so they will most likely go into the Bangladesh Test series without much match practice.”

“While it’s understandable that someone like Jasprit Bumrah, with his delicate back, needs to be handled with care, the batters could have benefitted from some time in the middle. Once a player hits their mid-thirties in any sport, regular competition helps maintain the high standards they have set. When there’s a long gap, muscle memory weakens somewhat, and returning to previous high standards becomes difficult,” he added.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both featured in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, with contrasting performances. While Virat Kohli struggled to find his footing, Rohit Sharma appeared in threatening form.

Who is playing in Duleep Trophy 2024?

Meanwhile, other cricketers like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have all been picked for the first round of matches in the Duleep Trophy 2024.

Many players struggled against spin during the Sri Lanka tour, and the Duleep Trophy might provide the much-needed practice to acclimate to conditions ahead of the Bangladesh Test series.
