The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hierarchy is yet to decide whether to retain their captain KL Rahul or release him ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.

However, it is worth mentioning that even if the team decides to retain KL Rahul, it is highly unlikely that they will reappoint him as captain for the next season. 

Rahul’s performance as both a batsman and captain was below par in the last season, where the team failed to qualify for the playoffs since making their debut in IPL 2022.

Furthermore, there was a major controversy after Lucknow Super Giants’ owner, Sanjeev Goenka, was seen scolding KL Rahul on camera following an embarrassing defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad. 

Since then, reports suggest that KL Rahul may not want to stay with the team. It will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds, but one thing is certain: if the Karnataka batsman goes under the hammer in the IPL 2025 mega auction, he is likely to attract a significant bid.

Zaheer Khan to Become LSG’s New Bowling Coach and Mentor

In another development, the Lucknow Super Giants are in talks with former Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan to take over as the team’s mentor and bowling coach.

LSG Eyeing a New Captain

Although not confirmed officially, there are reports that the Lucknow Super Giants’ owners are in close contact with both Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, aiming to bring them to the team and appoint one of them as captain.

It is worth mentioning that both Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma were reportedly unhappy with the Mumbai Indians’ management last season when Rohit Sharma, the five-time IPL-winning captain, was removed from captaincy and replaced by Hardik Pandya.

Moreover, Rohit Sharma recently led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, further boosting his reputation. There is a high chance that he is eager to return to captaincy, and if LSG offers him the role, he may very well accept it.
