Athletes are frequently trained to stay strong under pressure and handle criticism or trolling, but many often struggle with online harassment and it affects their performance.
Indian cricketer KL Rahul recently shared how the trolling and criticism he faced have impacted him, making him the latest victim of this trend.
The Indian wicketkeeper-batsman has frequently been criticized for his poor performance during the ODI World Cup 2023 and is often blamed for India’s defeat against Australia in the final.
In addition to this, KL Rahul’s hard-hitting game has declined over the past few years, and he has struggled to perform up to his potential in the T20 format.
In a recent podcast, Rahul admitted that a few years ago, he was trolled for almost everything he did, which impacted him, unlike when he was younger and better at handling it.
“I used to be good with [handling] trolling. I did not care, but I feel I was much younger back then. And then, a couple of years back, I was exposed to a lot of trolling. If I sat, I got trolled, if I stood, I got trolled,” Rahul said on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast.
“I am done with the trolling now. For the last one and a half years, I have gotten off Instagram completely. I still go, post and do my things and get out of that place as quickly as possible,” he added.
KL Rahul is currently preparing for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024, where he will play under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, as he gets ready for the Bangladesh Test series.
