Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) newly appointed mentor, Zaheer Khan, supported the ongoing conversation surrounding the Impact Player rule in the IPL

The former fast bowler, who joined the team as mentor, expressed similar views to Ravichandran Ashwin, who had shared his thoughts on the rule just a day prior.
Here’s what Zaheer Khan said during LSG event:

“As far as all-rounders are concerned, there is no space for a half-all-rounder because of the impact sub. But if you are a genuine all-rounder, no one can stop you. There will always be a value addition if you have that kind of ability with bat and ball.”

According to Zaheer Khan, the Impact Player rule creates a great chance for uncapped players to display their talent at the highest level.

“I am for it (Impact Player rule). It has given chances to a lot of uncapped Indian players. You will see that in this mega auction when teams will be looking at them. The opportunity goes a long way toward improving Indian cricket as a whole,” Zaheer stated.

The Impact Player rule, which permits a player in the starting 11 to be substituted by one of the five listed substitutes during the match, was introduced in the 2023 IPL season.

Big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Akshar Patel, and others have spoken out against the Impact Player rule and are not in favour of it being included in the IPL 2025 season. It remains to be seen how the BCCI will address this issue.
