St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots beat Antigua and Barbuda Falcons by one wicket in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 opener to kick off their tournament campaign with a bang.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, having won the toss, elected to field, putting the Falcons into bat. The match was played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua.
The Falcons’ innings got off to a shaky start with the early loss of Teddy Bishop in the second over. Fakhar Zaman, however, countered with an attacking innings, rescuing the team.
However, once Zaman was dismissed, the Falcons suffered a collapse. Among the important wickets lost was that of their wicketkeeper batter, Sam Billings. He was well set on 18 from 14 balls when he tried to increase the scoring rate in the 14th over, only to lose his wicket.
On the final delivery of the over, Dominic Drakes bowled a back-of-a-length delivery aimed around middle and leg stump. Sam Billings attempted a pick-up shot towards backward square leg. Though he didn’t connect properly, the ball still went over the boundary after catching the top edge of his bat.
However, Odean Smith, stationed in the deep, ended Billings’ innings. Smith caught the ball but realized he was about to step over the boundary, so he quickly released it and then stepped back into play to complete the catch.

The catch was similar to Suryakumar Yadav’s crucial catch of destructive batter David Miller in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final against South Africa, which proved decisive as India went on to win the trophy.
