In a concerning development, WION has reported that the Taliban is planning to ban all forms of cricket in Afghanistan. This follows their ban on women’s cricket in 2021.

This news comes at a time when Afghanistan cricket is making significant strides on the global stage. In the T20 World Cup matches held in June, the team reached the ICC event semi-finals for the first time, and fans in Kabul rejoiced with street celebrations.

According to reports, Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Supreme Leader of Afghanistan, has hinted at a phased ban on cricket. While an official statement is yet to be made, it is well-known that the Taliban controls the country.

The Taliban has already banned women from participating in any sports, and now, male players might face a similar fate under the extremist regime.

Playing Cricket is against Sharia Law: Hibatullah Akhundzada

The report stated that Akhunzada is unhappy with Afghanistan playing cricket, claiming it has harmful effects and goes against Sharia Law. This stance has sparked a conflict between two factions in Afghanistan—one led by Akhunzada and the other by Sirajuddin Haqqani, brother of Anas Haqqani, a major investor in Afghan cricket.

The Afghanistan team recently hosted New Zealand at Greater Noida, India, for what was meant to be their first-ever Test match against New Zealand. However, on Friday, September 13, the match was abandoned without a single ball being bowled over the five days.
