Star Bangladesh all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, has announced that he will retire from Test cricket. The news comes just ahead of the second Test between India and Bangladesh, scheduled for September 27 at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Shakib revealed that this match could be his last unless the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) grants his request for a farewell game at Mirpur.

Farewell Plans at Mirpur

Speaking before the Kanpur Test, Shakib shared his wish to end his Test career in front of his home crowd in Mirpur. Bangladesh is set to play South Africa in a two-match Test series starting on October 21, and Shakib has requested the BCB to allow him to play his final game there.

“I think I have played my last T20I match. I’ve informed the BCB about my wish to end my Test career in Mirpur, and they’ve agreed in principle,” Shakib stated.

However, if arrangements for the farewell match do not come through, the Kanpur Test against India will be his last in the longer format.

T20I Retirement and Future in ODI Cricket

In addition to his Test retirement, Shakib confirmed that he has likely played his final T20I match. The all-rounder has been a key figure in every T20 World Cup since the tournament began in 2007.

In the 2024 edition, he finished as the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker, with 50 wickets to his name. Throughout his T20I career, Shakib has played 129 matches, scoring 2551 runs and claiming 149 wickets for Bangladesh.

Looking forward, Shakib has set his sights on the 2025 Champions Trophy, which he plans to make his last ODI tournament before retiring completely from international cricket.
