Green Park Stadium in Kanpur has recently come under heavy criticism. The first three days of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh were significantly disrupted.

On the first day, only a couple of sessions took place before the match was called off due to poor lighting. The second and third days were entirely abandoned, not due to rain, but because the outfield remained wet.

The ground staff couldn’t prepare the field in time. These issues have sparked debate about whether Kanpur should continue to host Test matches. Here are the top three reasons why Kanpur should be banned from hosting future Test matches:

1. Poor Drainage Facility

The biggest concern with Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium is its poor drainage system. This issue became crystal clear on Day 3 of the India-Bangladesh Test match. Despite no rain, play was abandoned because the field was soaked. The outfield had puddles, making it unsafe for fielders. The groundsmen tried several methods, but they couldn’t remove the water from the pitch.

2. Dangerous Stadium Structure

Another alarming issue is the condition of one of the stands in Green Park Stadium. Ahead of the India vs Bangladesh Test, officials raised concerns that one of the stands was deemed “unfit” and “dangerous” for spectators.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD), the stand could collapse if filled to full capacity. This is a major safety hazard. When safety is in question, the focus shifts from the game to managing risks. Such concerns make it hard to justify Kanpur as a venue for high-profile matches.

3. Test Cricket Should Be Played at Top 5 Big Centres

In countries like Australia and England, Test cricket is usually played in major cities with top-class facilities. India should follow a similar model. With iconic venues like Eden Gardens, Wankhede, Chinnaswamy, Chepauk, and Arun Jaitley Stadium, there’s no shortage of top-tier options.

These venues offer consistent playing conditions, better infrastructure, and modern facilities that Kanpur currently lacks. By focusing on these big centres, the Indian team can better prepare for the challenges of international cricket and avoid unnecessary disruptions caused by poor venue conditions.
