Rachin Ravindra shone brightly in Bengaluru, making it a memorable day for New Zealand cricket. The young all-rounder achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first New Zealand batter to score a Test century on Indian soil since 2012. His impressive innings came on Friday when he scored 134 runs, guiding his team to a total of 402 and giving them a lead of 356 against India on day three.

Resuming his innings at 22, the Wellington-born batter was the last New Zealand wicket to fall. His century was marked by an aggressive display, featuring 13 boundaries and four sixes. He reached his hundred with a boundary off Ravichandran Ashwin just before lunch, setting the tone for the rest of his innings. Ravindra had earlier made headlines by scoring his maiden Test century against South Africa earlier this year.

New Zealand’s Resilience

Though New Zealand faced challenges in the morning session, losing four wickets, Ravindra’s century provided much-needed momentum. He formed a crucial partnership with Tim Southee, as the duo put together an eighth-wicket stand of 137 runs. Southee also played a vital role, scoring 65 runs, including five fours and four sixes.

The Indian bowlers tried hard to break the partnership, with Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav each claiming three wickets to help bowl out the visitors during the second session. The Indian pace attack was effective as well, with Mohammed Siraj striking early by dismissing Daryl Mitchell, who scored 18 runs. Jasprit Bumrah continued the pressure by getting wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blundell out for just five runs, caught at second slip.

Ravindra’s achievement is especially significant, as he became the first New Zealand batter to score a Test century in India since Ross Taylor’s innings at the same venue in 2012. With this century, Ravindra joined the elite list of 21 New Zealand players who have achieved a Test hundred in India. His performance not only showcased his talent but also highlighted the potential of New Zealand’s younger players on an international stage.
