The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are preparing for major changes ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, with reports suggesting that captain KL Rahul is set to be released. Despite playoff appearances in two out of three editions, the management appears to be shifting focus towards fresh strategies.
KL Rahul to Part Ways
Discussions within the LSG camp have reportedly led to a consensus to part ways with Rahul. Sources close to the franchise revealed, “We have discussed KL’s role with the team management multiple times, and there is consent that we will move forward without him.”
Rahul’s strike rate has been a cause for concern, particularly over the last two seasons. While he started strong in 2022 with 616 runs at a strike rate of 135.38, his performance dipped the following year with a strike rate dropping to 113.22. Though he made a decent comeback in 2024, scoring 520 runs with a strike rate of 136.13, a mid-season injury in 2023 raised questions about his consistency.
Having played 132 IPL matches and amassed 4,683 runs, including four centuries and 37 fifties, Rahul’s experience and talent remain unquestionable. However, the franchise seems ready to explore other leadership options. With his release, Rahul is expected to be a high-profile name in the 2025 mega auction.
LSG Retentions: Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, and Nicholas Pooran
While Rahul’s departure is likely, LSG intends to retain several core players. Among them, pace sensation Mayank Yadav has emerged as a priority. Known for consistently bowling at speeds exceeding 155 kmph, Mayank Yadav troubled opposition batters in the few opportunities he got during the 2024 season.
Mayank’s value surged after making his T20I debut for India against Bangladesh. Reports suggest LSG is prepared to keep him with a contract in the range of Rs 11-14 crore, reflecting their faith in his potential. Ravi Bishnoi, the talented leg-spinner, is also on the retention list.
Despite taking only 10 wickets in 14 games during IPL 2024, Bishnoi remains a valuable part of LSG’s plans, given his past achievements. As a former world No. 1 T20I bowler, the young spinner is expected to get a salary boost from his previous Rs 4 crore contract.
Nicholas Pooran, who stepped in as captain for one match last season, is another key player likely to be retained. His contributions with the bat and ability to stabilize the middle order have made him a crucial asset. LSG is reportedly willing to retain Pooran at a substantial price.
Possibility of Rahul’s Return?
Interestingly, there is speculation that LSG may still look to bring Rahul back during the auction, provided they can secure him at a more favorable price. His experience and leadership qualities remain valuable, and a balanced bid might pave the way for his return.
The final list of retained players will be officially announced by October 31. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how LSG shapes its squad for the upcoming IPL season.
