Ravichandran Ashwin etched his name deeper in cricket history on Thursday, surpassing Australian spinner Nathan Lyon to become the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. The veteran off-spinner achieved the feat during India’s second Test against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Ashwin, playing in his 104th Test, needed three wickets to overtake Lyon’s tally of 530 wickets—and he delivered in style. Ashwin struck early, dismissing New Zealand captain Tom Latham for 15 in his very first over, setting India off to a strong start. His second breakthrough came when he sent Will Young back to the pavilion for 18, with Rishabh Pant taking a sharp catch behind the stumps.

Ashwin then removed Devon Conway, who had been anchoring New Zealand’s innings with a well-made 76, once again with Pant completing the catch. With these three wickets, Ashwin’s total tally rose to 531 wickets, placing him just above Nathan Lyon on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers.

The elite list of Test cricket’s highest wicket-takers is led by Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan with 800 wickets, followed by Australia’s Shane Warne (708) and England’s James Anderson (704). Ashwin’s next target on the list is Glenn McGrath, who sits in sixth place with 563 wickets.

Beyond his ascent in the all-time Test wicket-takers list, Ashwin also claimed another record. By picking up two early wickets in the morning session, he surpassed Lyon as the leading wicket-taker in World Test Championship (WTC) history. Ashwin now has 189 WTC wickets, surpassing Lyon’s tally of 187.
