Indian cricket team faced a tough blow on Sunday, suffering a rare 3-0 home series whitewash at the hands of New Zealand, just ahead of their crucial tour of Australia beginning on November 22. This defeat means India must win four out of five matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final without relying on other results.

Mounting Pressure Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

With limited time to regroup before facing the formidable Australian side, questions are arising over India’s preparations for the upcoming series. Adding to the concerns, the team recently cancelled a warm-up game scheduled before the first Test in Perth, a decision that has drawn criticism from several quarters.

Veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his concerns, suggesting that India’s aggressive approach, more suited to white-ball cricket, could pose a challenge in Australia. According to Gavaskar, India’s focus on fast-paced scoring might leave them vulnerable in the longer format, especially on pitches that offer assistance to bowlers.

“The short boundaries and big bats mean even mistimed shots often clear the ropes,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar, pointing out how this environment has impacted players’ techniques and mentalities.

“In Test cricket, especially on tricky surfaces, patience is key. However, many modern batters struggle with this, as they aim to score at breakneck speeds instead of tiring the bowlers or waiting for better conditions,” he explained.

Gavaskar also lamented the exclusion of more traditional players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane from India’s strategy. Known for their patience, Pujara and Rahane often wore down bowlers, allowing stroke-makers to capitalize later in the innings. This approach, Gavaskar noted, is missing from the current Indian side, which instead emphasizes a faster scoring pace similar to England’s approach in recent overseas tours—a tactic that has not always delivered success.

India’s commitment to an all-out attacking style may indeed need a rethink as they prepare to face the experienced Australian bowling unit. With Test cricket demanding a mix of resilience and adaptability, Gavaskar’s insights underscore a potential area of improvement for the Indian team.

The outcome of the Border-Gavaskar series will reveal whether India’s aggressive tactics can withstand the pressures of Australian conditions or if a more balanced approach will be necessary.
