David Warner has been appointed captain of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, marking his return to a leadership role after Cricket Australia (CA) recently lifted his ban.

The decision to remove Warner’s restriction on leadership roles follows a ruling by CA’s Code of Conduct Commission, which deemed the 2018 penalty no longer necessary. This change allows Warner to lead Thunder through the entire season.

“Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me,” Warner shared. “I want to pass on the knowledge I’ve gathered, helping these young guns grow so that they might step up and lead in the future.”

Thunder’s general manager, Trent Copeland, played a significant role in Warner’s appeal and shared the broader significance of Warner’s captaincy.

“This is a defining moment for David and our club. It’s not just about cricket; it’s about the legacy he’s building for the community and his family,” Copeland noted.

Warner’s leadership has extended beyond Australian cricket since his CA ban, as he captained teams in the Bangladesh Premier League, IPL, and ILT20. His last stint as captain for an Australian team was in 2018, leading the T20I side against New Zealand.

Sydney Thunder will kick off their BBL campaign on December 17 against the Adelaide Strikers in Canberra, with a local derby against the Sydney Sixers scheduled for December 21.
