Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell recently shared details of his exit from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. After being with the franchise since 2021, Maxwell was informed that he would not be among the three players retained for the upcoming season, with RCB choosing to keep Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal. Unlike many releases, however, Maxwell’s departure came with an unexpectedly warm and respectful conversation, which he described as a “beautiful” exit.

Maxwell explained on the Around The Wicket podcast that he was on a Zoom call with RCB’s Director of Cricket Mo Bobat and head coach Andy Flower, who took time to explain the decision and discuss the franchise’s future plans. Reflecting on the call, Maxwell shared that they discussed strategies for almost half an hour, giving him insight into RCB’s new direction.

“It was actually a very beautiful exit meeting. We ended up talking about the game for almost half an hour – talking about the strategy and looking to go forward. I was really happy with that,” Maxwell said. “If every team did that, I think it would probably make the relationship smoother. I could not speak high enough of the way they dealt with the whole situation.”

RCB initially secured Maxwell for a hefty INR 14.25 crore in 2021. Over his four seasons with the franchise, Maxwell displayed flashes of brilliance, scoring 1,266 runs with 12 half-centuries across 52 matches. However, his form fluctuated, and in the 2024 season, Maxwell struggled, scoring just 52 runs in 10 matches. Despite these challenges, he reminisced about his impactful role in the team’s middle order in earlier years alongside stalwarts Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Maxwell also noted RCB’s focus on building a stronger Indian core, saying:

“I understood that process was going to take a bit of time. But yeah, you start to get edgier around that last date – whether you’re going to get retained. They need three Indians to build that core and hopefully, the overseas can complement those locals.”

Potential Return or Bidding War?

With a base price of INR 2 crore set for the mega auction, Maxwell is likely to attract intense interest from franchises looking for an experienced T20 all-rounder. While RCB may explore bringing him back, other teams are expected to be in the running, leading to a potential bidding war.

Reflecting on his time with RCB, Maxwell expressed a desire to return if possible.

“I wouldn’t say my RCB journey is over; I would certainly like to get back there. It was a great franchise to play for, and I really enjoyed my game there,” he added.
