The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering appointing Jason Gillespie as the all-format head coach for the national team, depending on the outcome of Pakistan’s current white-ball tour of Australia, according to sources. Currently the Test team head coach, Gillespie is also handling the white-ball squad in Australia after Gary Kirsten’s unexpected resignation.
A PCB source shared that the board has a plan in place to keep Gillespie as the head coach across all formats rather than advertising for new candidates.
“If Pakistan performs satisfactorily in the remaining games in Australia, then in all probability, Gillespie would be asked to take over as the all-format head coach,” the source told PTI.
PCB Eyes Strong Performance for Decision
Pakistan faced a narrow two-wicket defeat to Australia in the first ODI in Melbourne on November 4. They are scheduled to play two more ODIs, in Adelaide on Friday and in Perth on Sunday, followed by a three-match T20I series against Australia on November 14, 16, and 18.
The board hopes that a solid performance by Pakistan in these games will strengthen their decision to bring Gillespie on board as the all-format coach, at least until April. The team is set to fly to Zimbabwe for another white-ball series immediately after the Australia tour, meaning a final call on Gillespie’s potential role is expected before then.
PCB Has Backup Options in Place
While the PCB’s top preference is to secure Gillespie as the all-format head coach, they have prepared a shortlist of three former Pakistan players, including ex-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, should Gillespie choose not to take on the expanded role.
The PCB believes that if the white-ball series in Australia goes well, Gillespie will likely agree to the all-format position, marking a significant step toward stability in Pakistan’s coaching structure across formats.
