Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s interim white-ball coach, has announced that he will not be taking the role on a permanent basis. This news comes as Pakistan leveled their ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia, winning the second game by nine wickets in Adelaide on November 8.

Recently, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shown interest in appointing Gillespie as the head coach across all formats if Pakistan performs well in the current white-ball series. However, despite the PCB’s interest, Gillespie has clarified that he is not willing to take on the responsibility permanently.

PCB’s Interest in Gillespie as All-Format Coach

Gillespie currently serves as the head coach of Pakistan’s Test team and took on interim white-ball coaching duties following Gary Kirsten’s sudden departure. Sources suggest the PCB is carefully observing Pakistan’s performance under Gillespie’s guidance during the Australia tour. A strong showing might have solidified him as an all-format coach.

A PCB source indicated to PTI that the board is leaning toward offering Gillespie the role directly rather than publicly advertising for candidates. “For now, the Board is working on a plan to appoint Jason Gillespie as all-format head coach,” the source stated.

Jason Gillespie Cites Family Commitments

While the PCB’s interest is strong, Gillespie has expressed his inability to commit to the role permanently. Speaking in Adelaide, he emphasized his desire to spend more time with his family, explaining that the extensive travel involved in an all-format coaching position would be challenging to manage.

“I love coaching, but I don’t believe I can spend 11 months away from home,” Gillespie said, adding that the intense schedule would take a toll on him personally and mentally.

As Pakistan’s packed cricket calendar continues, with a tour to Zimbabwe following their Australia visit, the PCB may now need to search for an alternative candidate for the white-ball coaching position.
