The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that India will not participate in the Champions Trophy 2025 if it is hosted in Pakistan. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan, following guidance from the Indian government.
The Champions Trophy, scheduled to start on February 19, 2025, was initially set to take place across three venues in Pakistan. However, with India’s refusal to travel, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and ICC may need to explore other options, including a hybrid model. This model, which allows some matches to be played in a neutral country, was previously used for the 2023 Asia Cup, where games took place in both Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to similar circumstances.
PCB’s Response and Calls for Written Communication
PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi expressed disappointment and said he had not yet received official communication from the BCCI. Addressing the media at Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi clarified that there have been no formal discussions about a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy and that the PCB does not currently support such an arrangement.
“In the last two months, Indian media has been reporting that India isn’t coming,” he noted, adding that any objections from the BCCI must be formally submitted in writing.
Naqvi stressed that if a letter from the Indian board is received, the PCB will consult with the Pakistani government to determine their response.
“Pakistan has extended friendly gestures in the past, but India shouldn’t expect this every time if they refuse to participate in Pakistan-hosted events,” he stated.
He further hinted that future Pakistani participation in events hosted by India could also depend on the government’s decision.
Potential Neutral Venues for India’s Matches
If a hybrid model is ultimately adopted, the UAE is likely to host India’s matches due to its close proximity to Pakistan. Sri Lanka might also be considered as an alternative neutral venue for the games. The ICC and PCB are expected to discuss further steps, while awaiting any official communication from the BCCI on this matter.
