The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing a major decision on hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declining to send their team to Pakistan, the PCB is under pressure from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to adopt a hybrid model.

This proposal would see Pakistan hosting most of the matches, while India’s games would be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, if PCB doesn’t accept this option, the tournament may be shifted entirely to South Africa.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed a strong desire to host all matches in Pakistan, but ICC’s suggestion of a hybrid model presents a tough choice. According to reports from Sports Tak, the ICC is ready to relocate the tournament to South Africa if an agreement isn’t reached with the PCB.

Pakistan’s Previous Use of the Hybrid Model

The hybrid model isn’t new for Pakistan. The PCB used this approach for the Asia Cup 2023, where India’s games were held in Sri Lanka, allowing the tournament to proceed despite India’s refusal to play in Pakistan. This arrangement proved successful, with India eventually winning the Asia Cup.

However, Naqvi recently dismissed any discussions around a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy, stating, “No one has discussed any ‘Hybrid Model’ with us, nor are we willing to talk about it.”

With ongoing uncertainty, the ICC has already postponed a major event in Lahore, which was intended to announce the Champions Trophy schedule. Typically, the ICC releases tournament schedules 100 days in advance, but the 2025 Champions Trophy schedule remains on hold due to the unresolved hosting issues.
