The cricketing world witnessed another exchange of words between former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and India head coach Gautam Gambhir. The clash began after Ponting raised questions about Virat Kohli’s recent form in Tests, a comment that didn’t sit well with Gambhir. Ahead of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which kicks off on November 22 in Perth, this verbal duel has stirred discussions on both sides.
Ponting, during an ICC Podcast interview, expressed concerns about Kohli’s performance, stating that the Indian star had managed just three centuries in the past five years. He pointed out Kohli’s struggles, particularly after India’s home series loss to New Zealand, where Kohli scored only 93 runs at a poor average of 15.50. For a batsman of Kohli’s caliber, Ponting’s observations came as constructive criticism, yet they ignited a heated response from Gambhir.
What Did Gautam Gambhir Say?
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Gambhir didn’t hold back. He questioned Ponting’s right to comment on Indian cricket and stood firmly behind Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket? I think he should focus on Australian cricket,” Gambhir said, adding that Kohli and Rohit are strong players who have already made significant contributions to Indian cricket and will continue to do so.
This sharp reply from Gambhir didn’t surprise Ponting. In an interview with Channel Seven, Ponting responded, describing Gambhir as a “prickly character.”
Reflecting on his own comments, Ponting clarified that he wasn’t trying to undermine Kohli but was merely expressing concern over his dip in form.
Ponting Reflects on His Relationship with Gambhir
Ponting acknowledged the tension between him and Gambhir, which dates back to their playing days. However, he didn’t seem offended by Gambhir’s response and even mentioned he would shake Gambhir’s hand if they crossed paths during the Test series.
“I said I would be concerned (about his form),” Ponting told 7NEWS. “But I think if you ask Virat, I’m sure Virat would be a little bit concerned that he hasn’t been able to make the same amount of hundreds as he has in previous years.
“In no way was it a dig at him. I actually followed it up by saying he’s played well in Australia and he’ll be keen to bounce back over here. So, it’s amazing how little things can get cut up, but he’s a class player and he’s played well in Australia in the past. I was surprised to read the reaction but knowing the coach, Gautam Gambhir … he’s quite a prickly character, so I’m not surprised it was him who said something back.”
As India and Australia gear up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, this exchange adds another layer of intensity to what promises to be a thrilling series.
