The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has recently taken a new turn. According to reports by Sports Tak, India may host the tournament if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decides to withdraw. This development comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined to send the Indian team to Pakistan due to a lack of government approval.

Hybrid Model Proposal in Discussion

The BCCI’s decision to not travel to Pakistan has led to the suggestion of a “hybrid model” for the Champions Trophy. This model, which allows matches to be played in two different countries, was proposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to the PCB.

However, the PCB has not yet responded. The PCB wants India to play in Pakistan, as their team traveled to India for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2023. The BCCI, however, has requested that India’s matches be held outside Pakistan, potentially with the final in Dubai. The PCB is against this proposal.

Political tensions between India and Pakistan have prevented bilateral tours for years, with India last visiting Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. The most recent series between the two teams was in 2012-13 in India, and since then, they have only met in ICC tournaments or the Asia Cup. BCCI officials have consistently emphasized that travel to Pakistan is only possible with government approval.

Last year’s Asia Cup was also held in a hybrid model, with India’s matches in Sri Lanka and the rest in Pakistan. If the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 follows a similar model or if Pakistan withdraws from hosting, India is likely to step in as the main venue for the tournament.
