The IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, witnessed history as Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player ever. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) signed the Indian wicketkeeper-batter for a staggering ₹27 crore, breaking the record set earlier in the day by Shreyas Iyer (₹26.75 crore).

A Dramatic Bidding War

Rishabh Pant, who was released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the auction, attracted fierce competition. Delhi Capitals initially used their Right to Match (RTM) card at ₹20.75 crore, but LSG escalated the bid to ₹27 crore, forcing DC to step back.

Pant had been a core part of the Delhi Capitals since 2016 and took over as captain in IPL 2021. Despite his leadership and consistent performances, DC decided to release him before the 2025 auction, paving the way for LSG to make this historic signing.

A Remarkable Comeback

The 27-year-old made a strong return to cricket in IPL 2024 after recovering from a life-threatening car accident in December 2022. In his comeback season, Pant scored 446 runs while leading Delhi Capitals, although the team had an average campaign.

Pant’s ₹27 crore deal surpasses Shreyas Iyer’s record-breaking signing with Punjab Kings just minutes earlier. With this acquisition, Lucknow Super Giants are banking on Pant’s explosive batting and leadership to power their IPL 2025 campaign.
