Harry Brook entered the record books on Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, by reaching 2000 Test runs. However, he narrowly missed becoming the fastest batter to achieve the feat in terms of balls faced. Brook reached the milestone after 2300 deliveries, falling just seven balls short of Ben Duckett’s record of 2293.
Despite missing the all-time record, Brook is now the second-fastest player to reach 2000 Test runs. New Zealand’s Tim Southee ranks third, achieving the landmark in 2418 deliveries. Australia’s Adam Gilchrist follows in fourth, reaching the mark in 2483 balls. Brook’s rapid scoring rate continues to impress, making him one of the most exciting players in modern cricket.
Brook and Pope Steady England After Early Struggles
Brook’s exceptional innings, supported by Ollie Pope, pulled England out of trouble on Day 2. England, reduced to 71 for 4 at one stage, needed a solid partnership, and the duo delivered with a 151-run stand for the fifth wicket. Pope contributed a fluent 77 before falling to Tim Southee, thanks to a stunning catch by Glenn Phillips at gully.
Brook remained composed even after Pope’s dismissal and went on to notch his seventh Test century. His knock not only saved England from a collapse but also added to his tally of three hundreds in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, second only to Joe Root, who has six.
