The co-owner of Galle Marvels, a team in the Lanka T10 League, was arrested by Sri Lanka sports police on Thursday. Prem Thakkar, of Indian origin, faces allegations of offering match-fixing deals to players during the ongoing tournament.
The Lanka T10 League 2024 began on December 11 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, but the event has been overshadowed by this controversy. According to reports, several players accused Thakkar of approaching them with fixing offers. Local Sri Lankan players, along with an overseas player from the West Indies, rejected the offers and reported him to the anti-fixing unit.
After an investigation, Thakkar was taken into custody and will be presented in court on Friday. Authorities are now probing if a larger fixing network is involved.
Lanka T10 League Faces Challenges
This is the first season of the Lanka T10 League, but it has already faced major challenges. The fixing allegations have hurt the tournament’s reputation, which was launched to promote cricket in the shorter format.
Earlier this year, Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was banned for one year after admitting to not reporting a corrupt approach. His confession, however, allowed for a potential return in six months under ICC conditions.
The arrest of Thakkar is another blow for Sri Lankan cricket, which is working to restore its image after several corruption scandals.
