A controversy broke out during the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane after former England cricketer Isa Guha referred to Jasprit Bumrah as a “primate” while praising his bowling. Her remark upset fans on social media, who called it offensive.
Ahead of the third day’s play, Guha apologised on Fox Cricket’s broadcast. She clarified that her words were meant to praise Bumrah and called it an unfortunate choice of words.
Isa Guha Issues Public Apology
Guha had referred to Bumrah as the “MVP – Most Valuable Primate” while highlighting his role in India’s bowling attack.
She later explained, “Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be understood in different ways. I’d like to apologise for any offence caused. I hold myself to high standards of empathy and respect for others.”
Guha stressed that her comment was intended as praise for Bumrah, whom she deeply admires. “I was trying to emphasise his achievements and chose the wrong word. As someone with South Asian heritage, I hope people understand there was no malice in my words. I regret that it took away attention from a great Test match.”
Ravi Shastri Defends Guha
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri reacted to Guha’s apology, praising her courage. “It takes guts to apologise on live television. We all make mistakes in the heat of the moment. She has clarified her intent, and for me, the matter is closed. Let’s move on.”
