Six youths from the Baramati region’s drought-prone areas resorted to theft to fund their online rummy addiction. The Vadgaon Nimbalkar Police arrested the accused and recovered stolen property worth ₹3,16,700. This property includes 20 stolen agricultural water pumps from local farmers.
Baramati Farmers Suffer Losses Due to Pump Thefts
As reported by Dainik Prabhat, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Ganesh Biradar, the thefts occurred in areas such as Loni Bhapkar and Sahebachiwadi. The police launched an investigation following multiple complaints from farmers about missing pumps from borewells and wells in their fields. Swift police action led to the arrest of the accused, identified as Onkar Rajesh Arde (25), Mahesh Dilip Bhapkar (31), Amol Lahu Kadam (28), Nilesh Dattatray Madne (28), and Prathamesh Jalindar Kamble (22), all residents of Baramati taluka.
Police Investigation Leads to Arrests and Recovery
Upon questioning, the accused confessed to selling the stolen pumps to Kalidas Shivaji Bhosale of Loni Bhapkar, who allegedly used the proceeds to purchase a vehicle. This investigation also unearthed links to 17 other thefts, with police anticipating further revelations about additional crimes.
The investigation revealed that the young offenders, primarily children of farmers, had no prior criminal records. However, their addiction to online rummy led them down this path. In a particularly ironic twist, one accused even stole a pump from his own father’s field. The villagers were left shocked by the betrayal of trust, as the culprits came from the very community they victimized.
Efforts of the Vadgaon Nimbalkar Police Praised
This was achieved under the guidance of senior officers, including SP Pankaj Deshmukh, ASP Ganesh Biradar, and SDPO Sudarshan Rathod. The investigative team, led by PI Sachin Kale and comprising officers such as Rahul Sable, Dilip Sutar, and Anil Khedkar, received praise for their diligent efforts.
The Vadgaon Nimbalkar police’s investigation earned them a cash reward of ₹10,000 from ASP Ganesh Biradar. Local farmers and residents expressed their gratitude by honoring the officers for their exemplary work.
ASP Ganesh Biradar called the incident a tragic example of how addiction to online rummy addiction can lead to destructive behavior. “It is unfortunate that these youths fell prey to addiction and turned to crime,” he said. He emphasized the importance of community awareness and preventive measures to address such issues before they escalate.
