The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to start on March 21, with the final scheduled for May 25. This was confirmed by Rajeev Shukla, the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in an interview with India Today on January 12. The dates were finalized during a BCCI meeting held earlier in the day.
In the same meeting, new appointments were made for the positions of treasurer and secretary, while discussions about upcoming responsibilities were also held. The venue for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is almost decided, according to reports.
Last year, IPL 2024 began on March 22 and ended on May 26, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) winning the trophy. Initially, Shukla had mistakenly announced March 23 as the start date for the 2025 season but later clarified it as March 21.
Mega Auction Records and Venue Finalization
The IPL 2025 mega auction was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, over two days. A total of 182 players were sold for a whopping Rs 639.15 crore. Teams focused on strengthening their squads while retaining their core players. However, some franchises expressed concerns about losing players they had developed over the years.
Rishabh Pant created history by becoming the most expensive player in IPL, sold for Rs 27 crore. Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer followed, fetching Rs 26.75 crore and Rs 23.75 crore, respectively. Surprisingly, experienced players like David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, and Shardul Thakur went unsold.
The Eden Gardens in Kolkata has been finalized as the venue for IPL 2025. It will host the final after a long gap, adding excitement for the fans in the city. With the season approaching, teams and organizers are gearing up for a packed cricketing calendar.
