The IPL 2025 mega auction, held in November 2024, saw several top players picked up, but Williamson was left out. His lack of appeal among the franchises was surprising given his past performances in international cricket.

Kane, who has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans in the IPL, couldn’t attract a bid despite being a veteran in the format. With the IPL over, many players who went unsold registered for the PSL, including Australian opener David Warner. However, Williamson’s name once again failed to gain any interest, and he went unsold during the PSL draft.

What makes this situation even more interesting is that all of Williamson’s New Zealand teammates, including Mark Chapman, Adam Milne, Michael Bracewell, Finn Allen, and Daryl Mitchell, were successfully drafted into various teams. Kane Williamson, however, was the lone Kiwi player who didn’t find a team.

One of the main reasons behind Williamson’s ongoing struggles in T20 leagues is his playing style. Kane is primarily known for his skills in Tests and ODIs, where his composure and technique are suited to longer formats.

However, in T20 cricket, where fast scoring and big hits are crucial, Williamson has often been criticized for his inability to generate a high strike rate and play aggressive shots. This has made it harder for him to stand out in the fast-paced T20 leagues, which are dominated by explosive players.

Despite these setbacks, Kane is doing his best to stay active in T20 cricket. He recently made his debut for Durban Super Giants in the SA20, a competition known for its high-paced action. In his debut match, Williamson showed flashes of his former self, scoring an unbeaten 60 off just 40 balls.

It remains to be seen whether Williamson can find his place in future franchise leagues or whether his focus will return to his more natural role in the longer formats. For now, the question lingers: has the time come for the Kiwi to step away from T20 cricket?
