The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering changes to the Indian men’s cricket team’s coaching staff. The decision comes after India’s poor performances in Test cricket recently.
According to Cricbuzz, the role of the batting coach is under scrutiny. Some members of the BCCI and team management feel there is a need to improve Gautam Gambhir’s coaching support staff.
The BCCI discussed this issue during a review meeting held on January 11 to assess the team’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While the discussions included plans for a new coach, it remains unclear if the board will take immediate action.
Currently, the Indian coaching staff includes head coach Gautam Gambhir, bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip. Among them, Dilip is the only coach retained from the previous setup.
Morkel, Nayar, and ten Doeschate were Gambhir’s preferred choices for the coaching team.
Concerns Over Test Performances
India’s batting struggles in Test cricket have raised questions. The team has won only three of their last ten Test matches. They lost a home series against New Zealand and were defeated 3-1 in Australia.
India’s next Test series is scheduled in June when they will tour England. Before that, BCCI might take steps to strengthen the coaching staff to prepare the team for the Champions Trophy 2025.
