The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is thinking about adding a new batting coach to the Indian team. This comes after the team struggled with their batting during the recent Test series against New Zealand at home and their tour to Australia.

After India’s batting failures in the home series against New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, the BCCI has decided to look at improving the coaching staff.

The team’s performance and the support staff’s role have both been questioned, which led the BCCI to consider a new member for the coaching team. Currently, the support staff consists of head coach Gautam Gambhir, bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip.

Now, former domestic cricketer Sitanshu Kotak is reportedly the front-runner for the position of batting coach. Reports from Times of India suggest that the BCCI is seriously considering Kotak for the role.

Who is Sitanshu Kotak?

Sitanshu Kotak is a former cricketer who had a successful career in domestic cricket. He captained the Saurashtra team and played 130 first-class matches, scoring 8,061 runs at an average of 41.76. He also scored 15 centuries and 55 half-centuries between the 1992–93 and 2013 seasons.

After retiring from playing cricket in 2013, Kotak moved into coaching. He took over as the head coach of his state team, Saurashtra, and led them to their first-ever Ranji Trophy title in 2020.

Kotak also served as the batting coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. His experience extends to the India A team, where he replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach. Under his leadership, India A toured countries like Bangladesh, South Africa, and Australia.

Kotak was also the assistant coach for the Gujarat Lions in IPL 2017. More recently, he was the head coach for India A during their tour of Australia in November last year. In August 2023, Kotak also led the Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian team during their T20I series in Ireland, as well as the ODI series in South Africa.
