The final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2024-25 is currently underway between Karnataka and Vidarbha. After winning the toss, Karun Nair opted to bowl first, hoping his team could restrict Karnataka to a manageable total. However, Karnataka’s batsmen had other plans, and they put up a massive total of 348/6 in 50 overs.
Karnataka’s innings saw strong contributions from multiple players. Smaran Ravichandran played a brilliant knock, scoring 101 runs off 92 balls, including 7 fours and 3 sixes. Abhinav Manohar also played a blistering knock, scoring 79 off just 42 balls, which helped Karnataka to a mammoth total.
Despite some early blows, including the wickets of Devdutt Padikkal, Aneesh KV, and Mayank Agarwal, Karnataka’s middle order capitalized, with Krishnan Shrijith (78) and Smaran adding vital runs. Vidarbha’s bowlers, including Nalkande and Bhute, struggled to contain the attacking batting.
However, the focus quickly shifted to Karun Nair, who has been in excellent form throughout the tournament. Nair had scored over 770 runs in 8 matches during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, with an astonishing average of 380.
But in the final, he couldn’t replicate his success. Nair was dismissed for just 27 runs off 31 balls, a rare failure in what had been an otherwise remarkable tournament for the Vidarbha captain. It was tall pacer Prasidh Krishna who took the important wicket of Karun Nair.
Vidarbha’s chase started with some resistance from Dhruv Shorey, who was batting at 67 not out, but Karun Nair’s early departure put the pressure on the rest of the batting lineup.
Vidarbha were 88/2 when Nair was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna, and despite some fight from Shorey, they struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Vidarbha ended up with just 133/3 in 23.3 overs, falling far behind in their chase of 349.
As for Karun Nair, he has been overlooked for the India squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
