Team India all-rounder Nitish Reddy showcased his athletic prowess at Eden Gardens, pulling off a sensational diving catch to dismiss England skipper Jos Buttler in the first T20I on Wednesday, January 22. The spectacular effort ended Buttler’s gritty innings of 68 runs off 44 balls, where he stood as the lone warrior for the visitors.

Coming in at No. 3 after England lost early wickets, Buttler steadied the innings and played an attacking knock, hitting eight boundaries and two sixes. However, he struggled for support from the other end as Indian spinners, led by Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi, kept the English batting under control.

In the 17th over, Buttler took on Varun Chakravarthy, beginning the over with a towering six. On the very next ball, he attempted another big shot off a short-pitched delivery. However, the ball came onto him quicker than expected, resulting in a mistimed shot that flew toward deep square leg.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, positioned perfectly, sprinted forward and executed a brilliant low dive, grabbing the ball inches above the ground. The Eden Gardens crowd erupted as Reddy’s outstanding catch sent the well-set Buttler back to the pavilion.

Jos Buttler’s Contribution and England’s Struggles

Buttler’s dismissal marked a turning point in the game. His 68 runs were the backbone of England’s innings, but his teammates struggled to handle India’s bowling attack. Earlier in the innings, Buttler had also contributed in the field with a smart catch to dismiss Jamie Overton off Axar Patel’s bowling.

Team India’s Bowling Dominance

England’s batting lineup faltered against India’s disciplined bowling. Varun Chakravarthy led the charge with three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each. England were bowled out for just 132 runs in 19.3 overs, a below-par total on a surface offering assistance to the spinners.
