Shardul Thakur played a brave knock to rescue Mumbai from a batting disaster on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Jammu & Kashmir. The match was held at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai.
Mumbai’s batting, featuring stars like skipper Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, crumbled against the disciplined J&K bowlers. They were bowled out for just 120 runs in their first innings. Shardul stepped up when the team was struggling at 47/7, scoring a quick 51 runs from 57 balls and giving the score some respectability.
Star-Studded Mumbai Struggles Against J&K Bowlers
With several Indian stars returning to domestic cricket after BCCI’s suggestion, expectations were high from the Mumbai batting line-up. Rohit, playing in the Ranji Trophy after a decade, was dismissed for just 3 runs. He attempted a pull shot off Umar Nazir but ended up giving a catch to Paras Dogra.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) was trapped in front of the stumps by Auqib Nabi, who bowled beautifully on a fresh wicket. Shreyas Iyer, another big name, managed only 11 runs before getting caught at mid-on. Ajinkya Rahane (12) and Shivam Dube (0) also failed to contribute.
Umar Nazir was the standout bowler for J&K, picking up four wickets and troubling the top order. Yudhvir Singh and Auqib Nabi provided excellent support with the ball.
Shardul and Kotian Fight Back
Shardul, known for his fighting spirit, partnered with Tanush Kotian (26) to add 63 runs for the eighth wicket. Their efforts helped Mumbai cross 100 and avoid complete humiliation.
Jammu & Kashmir will now look to capitalize on their strong bowling performance as the match progresses.
