Maharashtra batter Ankit Bawne has been handed a one-match suspension by the BCCI for showing dissent towards an on-field umpire’s decision during a Ranji Trophy match last year. The ban means Bawne is unavailable for Maharashtra’s ongoing Group A match against Baroda in Nashik.

The incident occurred in November last year during a match against Services at the MCA Ground. Bawne was caught at slip by Shubham Rohilla off Amit Shukla, but he refused to accept the decision and stayed on the field for about 15 minutes. With no DRS available, the decision could not be challenged. The match only resumed after the intervention of match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni.

MCA Statement on the Suspension

In a statement, the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed Bawne’s suspension.

“Our Ranji Trophy player, Ankit Bawne, is currently serving a one-match ban imposed by the BCCI. As a result, he is unavailable for selection in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Baroda. However, we are pleased to confirm that he will be available for the next match and continue contributing to the success of the Maharashtra team,” the release stated.

The MCA also emphasized its commitment to discipline and sportsmanship, respecting the BCCI’s decision. The team remains focused on performing well in the ongoing match.

Controversial Dismissal Sparks Debate

Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was on an India A tour of Australia at the time, had shared images of the dismissal on social media. Gaikwad’s post suggested that the umpire’s decision to declare Bawne out was incorrect. However, the lack of a Decision Review System (DRS) in domestic matches left no room for overturning the call.
