Australia’s star batter and stand-in captain Steve Smith has added another big achievement to his name. He completed 10,000 Test runs during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on January 29. With this, he became the second-fastest Australian to reach this milestone. Smith achieved the landmark with a simple single, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Even the Sri Lankan players applauded him for his achievement.
At 35, Smith has joined a special list of cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, and Brian Lara. He is now the 15th player in Test cricket history to cross the 10,000-run mark. Among Australians, only Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ponting had reached this mark before him. Smith completed this milestone in just 115 Tests and 205 innings, making him the third-fastest player overall. The record for the fastest to 10,000 runs is shared by Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, and Kumar Sangakkara, who all did it in 195 innings.
Steve Smith’s Test Cricket Journey
Smith made his Test debut in 2010 against Pakistan at Lord’s. His first match was not impressive, as he managed only 13 runs across both innings. However, over the years, he worked hard and became one of Australia’s best Test batters. He has been a key player in the middle order, known for his consistency. He has scored 34 Test centuries so far, which is the second-most by an Australian. Only Ricky Ponting has more, with 41 Test hundreds.
