Telangana Cyber Security Bureau Strengthens Online Gaming Regulation to Curb Addiction and Financial Losses

Amid rising concerns over online gaming addiction and financial distress, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to discuss regulatory measures and potential solutions. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), CEOs and founders of major gaming platforms, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

As reported by Deccan Chronicles, Shikha Goel, Director of TGCSB, emphasized the alarming surge in online gaming, particularly among the youth, which has resulted in increased addiction, financial losses, and distressing cases of suicides linked to mounting debts.

Regulatory Concerns and Action Taken

The discussions focused on implementing effective measures to regulate online gaming activities in Telangana. Goel briefed attendees on the Telangana Gaming Act, outlining its legal provisions and their applicability to online gaming. TGCSB has already taken action by issuing notices earlier this week to gaming platforms involved in reported cases, instructing them to disable access to their services within the state.

Additionally, concerns were raised over the lack of regulation for offshore betting and gambling sites, which continue to operate without oversight. The introduction of geofencing technology and enhanced Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols were proposed as part of a broader effort to regulate online gaming and curb its associated risks. The measures were discussed in a high-level meeting held on Wednesday, bringing together key stakeholders from the gaming industry and telecommunications sector.

Call for Centralized Regulation

A key outcome of the discussion was a formal appeal to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for the establishment of a centralized regulatory body to oversee both domestic and offshore gaming platforms. The proposed regulatory framework would ensure compliance with state-specific legal norms, preventing unauthorized gaming operations and protecting users from financial harm.

Public Awareness and Helpline

The TGCSB has urged parents, educators, and young individuals to remain vigilant about the risks associated with online gaming. Excessive gaming can lead to addiction, financial hardships, and severe mental health consequences. Citizens are encouraged to report illegal gaming activities and seek assistance if affected by gaming addiction or financial distress. Help is available through the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or via the official website www.cybercrime.gov.in.

The Telangana government’s steps highlight the growing urgency to address the challenges posed by the online gaming industry while ensuring responsible gaming practices and consumer protection.
