Saqib Mahmood’s T20I debut against India in the fourth T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune became an unforgettable chapter in cricket history. The English pacer, making his first appearance on the tour in place of Mark Wood, achieved something that no other bowler had managed to do before: a triple-wicket maiden against India in T20 internationals.
In his very first over, he claimed the wickets of Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav. The feat not only marked his dream debut but also made him the first English cricketer to bowl a triple-wicket maiden and the first bowler from any team to do so against India in T20Is.
Mahmood’s over was an absolute masterclass in fast bowling. Samson, who had struggled against Jofra Archer in the series, went for a pull shot without looking at Mahmood’s delivery. He ended up edging the ball to the deep square leg fielder for a simple catch after scoring just one run from three balls.
Next up was India’s in-form batter, Tilak Varma, who had been looking promising throughout the series. But Mahmood made him pay for being too ambitious. Varma charged down the pitch and sliced a delivery straight to the third man fielder, marking his first-ever golden duck in T20 internationals.
The third victim was India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar, known for his aggressive batting, decided to give Mahmood the respect he deserved. However, in a bizarre turn of events, he ended up playing three dot balls before chipping a simple catch to mid-on off the last ball of the over. Mahmood had made history with a remarkable triple-wicket maiden.
