Jos Buttler’s comment about “impact subs” at the toss before the fifth T20I against India has sparked controversy. Many are wondering if it was a subtle dig at India following the concussion substitute controversy in the fourth T20I in Pune.

The Concussion Substitute Debate

In the fourth T20I, India replaced Shivam Dube with Harshit Rana after Dube was hit on the helmet in the final over of India’s innings. Harshit made an instant impact, taking three wickets and also dismissing Buttler with a catch. However, England was not happy with this decision, as ICC rules state that a concussion substitute must be a “like-for-like” replacement. Buttler openly criticized the call in the post-match press conference.

Buttler’s ‘Impact Subs’ Remark at the Toss

Ahead of the fifth T20I in Mumbai, Buttler won the toss and chose to field first. While discussing team changes, he mentioned “four impact subs,” a term used in the IPL but not in international cricket.

“Yeah, we played good cricket in patches. We are trying to enforce the style of play we want and win crucial moments in the game.

Yeah, good vibe around the team. This is a good venue to play cricket in any format. It is usually a good wicket. We are going to chase. We got one change, Mark Wood comes in, and four impact subs are Rehan Ahmed, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Smith, Gus Atkinson,” Buttler said.
