Namakkal Truck Driver Dies by Suicide After ₹75 Lakh Online Gambling Loss

A 45-year-old truck driver from Namakkal district tragically died by suicide after incurring a loss of Rs 75 lakh through online gambling. The deceased, identified as S Tamil Mani from Sadayampalayam near Kumarapalayam, reportedly took the extreme step on Saturday.

As reported by Times of India, Tamil Mani had been actively involved in multiple forms of online gambling, including online rummy and IPL cricket betting, for an extended period. His addiction to these games had resulted in mounting financial losses, which ultimately spiraled out of control.

The Devastating Impact of Online Gambling Losses on Individuals

On Saturday evening, he sent a distressing video message to his wife, Yasodha (40), and some of his close friends, in which he disclosed the full extent of his financial woes. In the video, he admitted to accumulating debts totaling Rs 75 lakh from various sources, including private lenders and acquaintances. He also expressed his helplessness in repaying the amount and stated that he could not see a way out, leading him to take this drastic decision.

Alarmed by the video, Yasodha immediately approached the Kumarapalayam police and, along with Tamil Mani’s friends, launched a desperate search for him. Their efforts, however, ended in heartbreak when they discovered his lifeless body on Sunday morning at a puncture shop owned by one of his friends.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the police arrived at the scene and retrieved the body. It was subsequently sent to the Government Hospital in Kumarapalayam for a postmortem examination.

Kumarapalayam police inspector T.A. Dhavamani confirmed that Tamil Mani had named several individuals—Vidya, Prakash, Balaji, and Vijayakumar—in his video message, suggesting they may have been involved in his financial dealings. “We have initiated an inquiry with the mentioned individuals, and appropriate action will be taken if they are found responsible,” the inspector stated. The police are also investigating whether any of these individuals operated or facilitated online gambling platforms.

Tamil Mani’s tragic death has once again brought to light the dangers of online gambling and its devastating impact on individuals and their families. With increasing reports of financial ruin and suicides linked to gambling addiction, there is growing concern about the regulation of online betting platforms in India. Many have called for stricter laws and awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies in the future.

A case has been registered, and further investigations are underway as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
