The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) management has yet to decide on their captain for IPL 2025, with COO Rajesh Menon refusing to reveal any details. RCB released their former skipper Faf du Plessis before the auction but did not actively pursue a clear captaincy option during the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Who Will Lead RCB in IPL 2025?
With the leadership spot vacant, speculation is high that Virat Kohli could return as captain. Kohli led RCB from 2013 to 2021, before stepping down due to workload concerns. However, with his T20I retirement, some believe he now has the time to take on the responsibility again.
When asked about RCB’s captaincy choice, Rajesh Menon remained tight-lipped, stating that the franchise has experienced players who could take on the role.
“Too early (to talk about it). There are different experienced people in the mix. So, we need to evaluate and come to a conclusion. It won’t be long before we come to that conclusion,” Menon told Sports Today.
AB de Villiers Backs Kohli for Captaincy
Former RCB star AB de Villiers has openly supported Kohli’s return as captain. He believes Kohli, who is nearing the final years of his career, should take charge once again.
“Friends, I think Virat Kohli is the only option for RCB’s captaincy. He is near the end of his career, more inspired than ever before. If he finds form and scores runs, we will see match-winning innings like we used to. It’s like a swansong,” de Villiers said in January.
While many fans and experts are hoping for Kohli’s return as captain, convincing him may not be easy. Kohli is known for standing by his decisions, and stepping down as captain in 2021 was a well-thought-out move. Even if given the opportunity, he may not be interested in taking the role back.
