In an exclusive interview with CNBC Awaaz, Sanjay Agarwal, Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), revealed some important updates regarding the country’s customs duties and GST on online gaming.
Key Updates on Customs Duties and GST for Online Gaming
Agarwal announced the reduction of custom duty slabs from 15 to 8, aiming to streamline the system. This move provides relief to industries. Regarding the online gaming sector, Agarwal shared positive developments in GST revenue. He stated that online gaming revenue has nearly quadrupled and continues to grow. Despite this surge, there are no immediate plans to reconsider the current 28% GST rate. Online gaming companies have not raised any objections so far.
Agarwal also addressed the issue of offshore gaming companies. Steps are being taken to block their operations in India. He reassured the public that the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGST) has the authority to block the websites of offshore gaming companies. These companies operate in India despite regulations.
Regarding further changes in GST rates, the Chairman confirmed that the GST Council is waiting for a report from the Group of Ministers (GoM) on rationalizing the rates. Once this report is received, the CBIC will act swiftly to implement the necessary adjustments.
The recent developments in custom duties and GST are expected to have a far-reaching impact on both businesses and consumers, ensuring a more simplified tax structure and a robust regulatory framework for the rapidly growing online gaming industry.
