England have suffered a setback ahead of their three-match ODI series against India, as wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith has been ruled out of the first two matches due to a calf injury, according to The Telegraph.
No Doubts Over Champions Trophy Availability
While Smith’s injury is a concern for England, reports suggest that he is expected to recover in time for the Champions Trophy 2025. His absence, however, means England will have one less option in the batting lineup for the first two ODIs.
Jacob Bethell, who was seen as a replacement for Smith in the T20I series, could once again step in if needed. Meanwhile, England still have Jos Buttler and Phil Salt as wicketkeeping options.
Smith made his England T20I debut in the second match of the recently concluded series against India. He played two games, scoring 28 runs at an explosive strike rate of 175 before sustaining the injury.
Series Opener in Nagpur
The first ODI between India and England will be played in Nagpur on Thursday, February 6. England, coming off a 4-1 T20I series defeat, will be looking for a strong response as they prepare for the Champions Trophy.
