During a recent parliamentary session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s potential to become a global leader in the gaming industry. He emphasized the rapid expansion of the sector and the opportunities it presents for game developers, esports professionals, and investors.

According to a report by Storyboard18, industry leaders have responded positively to the Prime Minister’s vision. Many believe that with the right policies and investments, India can establish a strong presence in global gaming.

Industry Leaders Support Government’s Gaming Push

Sridhar Muppidi, Chairperson of the Game Developers Association of India, stated that India could rank among the top three gaming nations within ten years. He emphasized the need for investment in grassroots talent and tax incentives for game development.

The Indian gaming industry is evolving rapidly, with many developers focusing on original intellectual property (IP). Roby John, CEO and Co-Founder of SuperGaming, highlighted the importance of India transitioning from a gaming consumer to a gaming creator. He believes government support can help Indian developers compete globally.

Beyond Esports: Need for Original Game Development

Chandrahas Panigrahi, Co-founder of Lets Game Now, stressed the importance of developing games, not just esports tournaments. He urged for more investment in game studios to foster an ecosystem for Indian-made games.

Experts suggest that India has the potential to create games inspired by mythology, history, and folklore. Countries like Japan and the United States have succeeded in building games based on their cultures. India could follow a similar path.

India’s Gaming Market Growth and Future Prospects

Reports indicate that India’s gaming industry will grow by 13.6% in 2024, reaching $943 million in revenue. By 2025, the market is expected to surpass $1 billion and reach $1.4 billion by 2028.

In April 2023, Prime Minister Modi met with India’s top gamers and developers. He explored advancements in virtual reality (VR), mobile gaming, and console gaming. His engagement signals the government’s recognition of gaming as a growing sector.

Strengthening India’s Global Gaming Presence

Ashish Srivastava, Co-Founder and COO of Glazer Games, believes India has the talent and digital infrastructure to lead in game design and development. He emphasized the need for structured policies and developer-friendly tax regulations to boost growth.

With government support, private investments, and rising talent, India is positioned for growth. The country could emerge as a major hub for game development, esports, and interactive entertainment in the coming years.
