Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) just 15 days before the ICC Champions Trophy. His decision comes as a surprise, especially with Australia preparing for the big tournament.

Marcus Stoinis Bids Farewell to ODI Cricket

Stoinis made his ODI debut in 2015, soon after Australia won their fifth ODI World Cup. Over the years, he played 71 matches, scoring 1,495 runs at an average of 26.7 and taking 48 wickets. He was an important part of Australia’s middle order alongside Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh.

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold,” Stoinis said in a statement released by Cricket Australia. He also mentioned that he had informed head coach Andrew McDonald about his decision.

Stoinis admitted that retiring was not easy, but he felt it was the right time to move on. “I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (McDonald), and I’ve hugely appreciated his support. I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” he added.

Challenges for Australia Ahead of the Champions Trophy

Stoinis’ retirement has created more problems for Australia ahead of the Champions Trophy. Mitchell Marsh is already ruled out, while captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood are uncertain for the tournament. The team will now have to find replacements quickly.

Australia will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against England on February 22 in Lahore.

Australia’s Preliminary Squad for ICC Champions Trophy:

Pat Cummins (c – unlikely), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood*, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis (retired), Adam Zampa, Mitchell Marsh (ruled out).
