Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi and South Africa batter Matthew Breetzke were involved in a heated exchange during the third match of the tri-series at the National Stadium, Karachi, on Wednesday, February 12.
Shaheen Afridi and Matthew Breetzke Face Off
The incident took place in the 29th over of South Africa’s innings when tempers flared between Afridi and Breetzke. The Proteas batter made a bat-swinging gesture towards a Pakistan fielder while denying a single, which seemed to annoy Afridi. The Pakistan speedster immediately walked up to Breetzke to exchange a few words.
Moments later, Afridi and Breetzke collided mid-pitch as the South African batter attempted a single. The clash led to an intense face-off at the non-striker’s end, with both players engaging in a verbal exchange. The on-field umpire had to step in to separate the two and calm the situation.

Breetzke’s Crucial Knock for South Africa
Despite the heated moment, Breetzke played a crucial knock of 83 off 84 balls, anchoring South Africa’s innings alongside captain Temba Bavuma (82 off 96). The duo put on a 119-run stand, frustrating the Pakistan bowlers after the early dismissal of Tony de Zorzi.
Breetzke, who made his ODI debut in the previous match, continued his fine form before getting dismissed by Khushdil Shah, leaving South Africa at 238/3. His innings included ten fours and a six, but he narrowly missed out on back-to-back centuries in just his second ODI.
Matthew Breetzke’s Record-Breaking Debut
In his debut match against New Zealand, Breetzke made history by registering the highest individual score on ODI debut. The 26-year-old smashed an unbeaten 150 off 148 balls, hitting 11 fours and five sixes. However, his knock went in vain as New Zealand won by six wickets, sealing their place in the final.
