Pakistan has been fined 5 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during their opening match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand. The penalty was imposed after Mohammad Rizwan’s side was found to be one over short of the required rate, even after taking time allowances into account.

Why Was Pakistan Penalized?

The over-rate offence occurred in the match at the National Stadium in Karachi. As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five per cent of their match fee per over if their team falls short of the stipulated time to complete their quota of overs.

Match referee Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees confirmed the fine after Pakistan failed to meet the over-rate requirement.

Who Imposed the Sanction?

The charge was levelled by the match officials, including:

  • On-field umpires: Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula
  • Third umpire: Joel Wilson
  • Fourth umpire: Alex Wharf

Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s captain, pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the fine.

What’s Next for Pakistan?

Pakistan now faces a crucial match against India on February 23 in Dubai. With only two teams advancing from each group, another defeat could severely hurt their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

Rizwan and his team will need to recover quickly and ensure they maintain the required over-rate in future matches to avoid further sanctions.
