Kerala started their first-ever Ranji Trophy final in style, with pacers M D Nidheesh and Eden Apple Tom making early breakthroughs. But Vidarbha fought back strongly, thanks to a brilliant partnership between Danish Malewar and Karun Nair.
Danish Malewar Shines with a Century
Vidarbha was struggling at 81/3 at lunch, but Malewar and Karun Nair turned the game around. They added over 150 runs for the fourth wicket, putting their team in a strong position.
The 21-year-old Malewar played with confidence, reaching his fifty with a six. He completed his century (113 off 188 balls) before tea, playing some aggressive shots. In a special moment, he moved from 93 to 99 with a huge six off Aditya Sarwate before reaching his second first-class century with a boundary.
Karun Nair’s Supporting Role
Karun Nair, played a crucial supporting role. He reached his half-century (50 off 128 balls) in the third session. He kept the scoreboard moving by taking quick singles and doubles, ensuring Kerala bowlers never settled.
Kerala’s Dream Start
Earlier, Kerala’s bowlers put Vidarbha in trouble early. M D Nidheesh struck in the second ball of the innings, trapping Parth Rekhade LBW. The umpire initially gave it not out, but Kerala captain Sachin Baby successfully reviewed the decision.
Nidheesh then dismissed Darshan Nalkande at deep square, reducing Vidarbha to 11/2.
The third breakthrough came from 19-year-old Eden Apple Tom, who got Dhruv Shorey caught behind for 16 runs.
Vidarbha’s Dominance in Ranji Trophy
Vidarbha has been in top form this season, winning eight matches and drawing one on their way to the final. Captain Akshay Wadkar is aiming to lead his team to their third Ranji Trophy title.
For Kerala, this is their first appearance in a Ranji final. They made only one change from their semifinal against Gujarat, bringing in Eden Apple Tom in place of batter Varun Nayanar.
With Vidarbha going strong at 182/3 in 62 overs, Kerala will need quick wickets on the second day to stay in the contest.
