Pakistan had a disappointing performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. They lost all three group-stage matches and failed to qualify for the next round. After this poor show, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made big changes to the team for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. Babar Azam and captain Mohammad Rizwan were both dropped.
Babar Azam faces criticism
Babar Azam has been struggling with his form for a long time. In the Champions Trophy, he scored only 126 runs in three matches. His highest score was 64, but it came in a losing match. Many former cricketers, including Shoaib Akhtar, criticized him heavily. Akhtar even called Babar a “fraud.”
Babar’s father defends him
Babar Azam’s father, Azam Siddique, reacted strongly to the criticism. He posted a long message on social media, supporting his son. He said that Babar was recently included in the ICC’s T20 Team of the Year, yet he was still dropped. He believed Babar would perform well in the National T20 and PSL, making a strong comeback.
Azam Siddique also asked former players to be careful with their words. He said they are from the past, and their time is over. He further added that as Babar’s father, he has always guided him and will continue to do so. He advised cricket fans to check PCB records before listening to old cricketers’ opinions.
Why was Babar dropped?
Pakistan’s interim head coach and selector Aaqib Javed explained the reason for dropping Babar and Rizwan. He said the team wanted to try a new approach in T20 cricket. Other teams already have different squads for different formats. Pakistan is now planning to do the same.
He also mentioned that Pakistan needs players who play fearless cricket. The team is preparing for the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, so they want fresh faces in the squad.
Babar Azam will now have to prove himself again in domestic cricket and PSL to regain his place in the national team.
