A 42-year-old man from Gandhinagar has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and five-year-old son. The accused, Haresh Vaghela, reportedly committed the crime after accumulating a ₹4 lakh debt due to online gaming.
According to The Times of India, the incident was discovered when an eight-year-old neighbor visited Vaghela’s residence in the Sargasan area and found the door open. Upon entering, the child saw the victims and immediately alerted others. Infocity police took Vaghela into custody on Sunday. He was produced in court on Monday and remanded to one day in police custody, said Inspector V R Kher.
Investigations revealed that Vaghela allegedly strangled his wife, Asha (40), before attacking his son. Police stated that he fatally injured the child by hitting his head against a safe, which had visible bloodstains. Following the murders, Vaghela attempted suicide by slitting his wrist with a sharp object. Authorities also recovered a suicide note in which he detailed his financial distress and the reasons behind his actions.
The Vaghela family had moved to Shri Rang Nano City-1 about a year and a half ago from Surendranagar district. Vaghela previously worked at a salon but lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic. He then turned to online gaming platforms, including rummy and ludo, hoping to earn money. Initially, he made small profits, but his gambling habits escalated, leading him to borrow money and fall into heavy debt.
Inspector Kher revealed that Vaghela had attempted suicide multiple times before his arrest. His methods reportedly included trying to set himself on fire and attempting to hang himself. After being hospitalized and receiving medical treatment, he was discharged and formally taken into custody.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as concerns grow over the financial risks associated with online gaming addiction.
