Gamerji, India’s esports tournament platform, has announced the launch of “Sportsdraft.” This innovative cricket gameplay introduces an IPL-style auction format for users nationwide.
Sportsdraft marks Gamerji’s first venture into sports gaming outside of real-money gaming (RMG) and fantasy sports. The platform allows cricket enthusiasts to experience team ownership through virtual auctions. Users can build their dream teams by bidding on players with virtual currency. They can join public leagues or compete with friends in private competitions.
The gameplay differs significantly from traditional fantasy sports models. Soham Thacker, CEO & Founder of Gamerji, explains the distinction. “It is a season-long experience that involves drafting players and getting the thrill of owning a team,” Thacker stated. “This is about actually experiencing the excitement of team ownership because you get exclusive rights to those players.”
Participants can join leagues through Gamerji’s website or mobile app. The auction process works on a timer mechanism, adding excitement to player selection. Each player has a base price and bidding windows last ten seconds. If no decision is made, the player goes to the highest bidder. Users can draft players for daily matches, assign Power Players for bonus points, and challenge opponents in 1v1 matchups.
Sportsdraft offers several engaging features for users. These include Daily Picker Mode for individual match drafts and Power Player designation for double points. Winners earn Gamerji diamonds, which can be redeemed for gift vouchers. These rewards come from Gamerji’s affiliated brand partners.
The platform has already seen substantial user engagement. Beta testing revealed 35% of Gamerji users playing Sportsdraft before its official launch. “We expect this to double as we reach IPL season commencement,” Thacker added.
Founded in 2019, Gamerji currently hosts over 1,400 daily tournaments boasting 16.7 million registered users across India and MENA regions. The company aims to reach 30 million users within the next year. This growth aligns with India’s rapidly expanding esports market. India’s esports market reached $200.7 million in 2024. Industry projections suggest growth to $919 million by 2033, with an 18.42% CAGR.
Sportsdraft will officially launch next week. The timing coincides with India’s Champions Trophy performance and the upcoming IPL season.
